#Tips#True#False#NotGiven#IELTS#

True / False / Not Given
  • If the fact matches the reading, then it is TRUE.
  • If the fact contradicts the information in the reading in some way, then it is FALSE.
  • If the fact is not mentioned or cannot be inferred in the reading, then it is NOT GIVEN.

True" means that the meaning is the same. You have to look for the meaning of the sentence rather than the words. Usually, synonyms are given. There can be different sentence structure in the passage and the statement in the question. Focus on the overall meaning rather than the words.

If the meaning contradicts then it is "FALSE". Remember we are dealing with factual information. There can be use of same words in the information given in the passage and the statement in question.

Not Given stands for incomplete information. When the information given in the passage is less than the statement in question then it is not given. Here, you have to consider qualifying words such as mainly, all, often, some, occasionally, and always. These words can completely change the meaning of a sentence. You need to be aware of them.

Do focus on the following two things:

1.   Parts of speech
2.   Synonyms
